Preparations for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa are in full swing as there are many construction works that have to be finished on time. This is a period when many concerns are raised and questions asked. The pressure from media, the FIFA and government is immense, but the constructionworkers have to keep a clear head and do their job. Most road workers work under contract for short periods of time, but some have already been on the scene for 1 year or more. Many live in townships nearby Port Elizabeth, others come from further away: East London, Umtata or even Zimbabwe. The conditions can be very tough: hot weather, dusty environment, simplistic tools, grueling routines, minimum wages and hard physical labour. However, most of them are used to working under these conditions. They are doing their job and making the deadline, a great achievement in honour of a special occasion.

Systems grow naturally, people create structures and systems to create order from chaos to simplify processes. Systems are a necessity for progress. At the same time, a system can work against itself. Slow bureaucratic processes within large organizations for example or complex computer systems. Within the system, automatism prevails, a phenomenon that also increases with the digitization of today's world. In juni 2010 vond het FIFA Wereldkampioenschap voetbal plaats in Zuid-Afrika. Een van de grootste internationale evenementen ooit georganiseerd op Afrikaanse bodem. Voor Zuid-Afrikanen heeft dit evenement een belangrijke betekenis. 16 jaar eerder had het land grote politieke hervormingen doorgevoerd, de apartheid werd afgeschaft en er kwam democratie. Sport was daarin een verbindende factor. Nu zal Zuid-Afrika het eerste Afrikaanse land zijn dat het Wereldkampioenschap voetbal organiseert. Het Zuid-Afrikaanse team, ook wel de Bafana's genoemd, is automatisch als gastland gekwalificeerd. De verwachtingen zijn hoog, de trots en vreugde is groot.

De Antwerpse voetbalclub Beerschot AC speelde sinds 1920 in het oude Olympisch stadion van Antwerpen totdat de club in 2013 failliet ging. Op 27 april 1994 werden in Zuid-Afrika voor het eerst democratische verkiezingen gehouden. Na een lange strijd tegen de apartheid kwam er politieke vrijheid voor alle Zuid Afrikanen. Freedom Day wordt ieder jaar gevierd met traditionele ceremonies en herdenkingstoespraken. Een fotoserie van Freedom Day in township New Brighton.

The Likoni Ferry school was started in 2006 by a group of woman in the coastal region of Kenya who saw the need to offering better education to south coast childeren. But many schoolchildren drop out due to personal commitments and to date Mss Irene is the only person who has remained active with the project. Mostly the school depend on the contribution from parents which in most occasions is not prompt. This makes it difficult for the school to operate. The school has three teachers and some of the many challenges they face are lack of good training materials and lack of proper teaching environment. The three teachers are volunteers and raising money for there allowances which is a great challenge. Most parents of the schoolchildren are not able to pay the feeding fee, which is about 50ct per day. Interview and text by: Elizabeth (Lizz) Ooko
