De zwavel wordt door lokale mijnwerkers uit de Ijen-krater gewonnen. Met grote manden op de rug worden zware gele zwavelblokken uit de krater omhoog gedragen. Het werk wordt 's nachts tot' s ochtends vroeg uitgevoerd wanneer de temperatuur nog dragelijk is.
